Northern Sweden´s burgeoning green industrial growth, projecting 100,000 new jobs, sets the backdrop for our initiative to counter the prevalent sedentary lifestyles among children exacerbated by urban designs lacking safe, walkable, and cyclable routes.
The project focuses on developing scalable, sustainable urban planning practices that aims to enhance physical activity among children through urban planning and community engagement.
Specific objectives include understanding community dynamics to inform project initiatives, collaborating with municipalities for integrating active independent mobility solutions into urban planning, and validating the effectiveness of these solutions for broader application.
The strategy involves modifying infrastructure to be safer and more accessible, launching awareness campaigns to promote the benefits of active independent mobility, and aiming for a cultural shift towards sustainable transportation.
The project also addresses the integration of active independent mobility into children’s daily routines, overcoming barriers such as unsafe or inconvenient non-motorized transport routes and societal biases towards motorized travel.
Through a participatory planning approach that involves end-users—children, teachers, and parents—the project not only reshapes physical spaces but also influences behavioural changes and societal norms, setting new standards in public health and urban planning.
