SustAinimal 2.0 will investigate roles of livestock for future increased, sustainable and competitive food production in Sweden.
Focus will be on solutions for future food production that deliver food, ecosystem services and nature values, has low negative impact on environment and climate and offers business opportunities along the food chain.
To account for the varied landscape, climate and socio-economic conditions across Sweden, SustAinimal 2.0 will take a regional approach and with four geographical nodes.
Examples of planned research areas are effects of ley and grazing on soil and crops in crop rotation, use of semi natural pastures for food production, reduced methane emissions from dairy, the role of animal feed as a buffer for the cropping system and inclusion of by-products in diets for pigs and poultry.SustAinimal will contribute to management on the farm level as well as to policy and governance on local and national level.
Integration of business and stakeholder organisations and using new dynamic methods for knowledge exchange will allow the timely application of knowledge from the Centre.
SustAinimal Academy for early career researchers ensures that the next generation scientists are equipped for the future. We set out to be the main arena for discussions on complex matters regarding animals in food systems in Sweden and to be a leading actor decision makers turn to for informed and sustainable decisions regarding land use, farming, livestock and food systems.
