Grant Description

IntroductionGenerative AI is rapidly evolving and offers significant opportunities for the built environment sector. This project aims to explore how the technology can be used to social benefit and increased value creation.

The focus is on how architecture and engineering consultancy firms can develop their business models to leverage generative AI.

Generative AI transforms work methods and business models by offering new possibilities in design, analysis, and automation. Architecture and engineering consultancy firms are particularly affected by this development.

Areas like creativity and analysis, which were previously safeguarded, are now challenged by AI solutions.Adapting to new business models has historically been a challenge for architects and engineers.

The construction sector is conservative and lags behind many other industries in adopting the efficiencies brought by industrialization and digitalization.

With generative AI, entirely new types of companies and services are emerging, which streamline and automate large parts of the work traditionally done by architecture and engineering firms.

Successfully transitioning to this new reality will be crucial for the future of these firms.PurposeThis project investigates how generative AI can create new value through new business models for architects and engineers.

Generative AI and digital transformation offer the potential to make the entire construction sector more efficient, reduce costs, improve quality, and create sustainable solutions.

The project aims to support this transformation by developing tools and knowledge that can help companies succeed.MethodThe project uses a combination of interviews and literature studies to gather knowledge.

In a series of workshops, architecture and engineering firms will work with experts and researchers to develop and innovate new business models. The group will also work on how to transition from existing business models to new ones.

Through this collaboration, the project aims to:Identify business opportunities: Explore how generative AI can create new business opportunities for architects and engineers.Develop business models: Create concrete examples of innovative business models that leverage generative AI.Identify success factors: Explore what is needed for companies to succeed with transformative business models and generative AI.Develop transition strategies: Investigate how companies can transition from existing business models to new ones.ToolboxThe project´s goal is to develop a toolbox for business model innovation and transformation, which includes:Guidance for innovation: How architecture and engineering firms can work with business model innovation in relation to generative AI.Idea bank: Concrete, innovative business models for generative AI relevant to architects and engineers.Guidance for transition: Strategies and methods for how companies can transition from traditional business models to new ones adapted to an AI-driven and changing reality.Climate TransitionParallel to the digital transformation, a climate transition is underway where linear business models are replaced by circular ones.

This change affects the entire construction sector and promotes the emergence of new companies that build their business models on digitalization, alternative payment methods, and collaboration along the entire value chain.

There is potential to further streamline and improve these processes with the help of generative AI.SignificanceGenerative AI has the potential to transform the construction sector by offering new business opportunities and improved processes. This project aims to equip architecture and engineering firms with the tools and knowledge to navigate this change.

By developing innovative business models and transition strategies, we strive to create a more efficient, sustainable, and successful construction sector for the future.SummaryGenerative AI represents a new era of opportunities in construction. The pr
