The Earth is warming because greenhouse gases have upset the balance between incoming sunlight and the emitted and reflected radiation.
Past space missions have not been able to measure this small difference with sufficient accuracy, and instead it is monitored through the slow increase of energy stored within the climate system.
The proposed Earth Climate Observatory (ECO) mission has the single objective measure the Earth´s energy imbalance with unprecedented accuracy and stability, at the levels required to inform international climate policy. The present proposal is to assess the ECO mission performance by developing a complete end-to-end mission simulator.
