Grant Description

RELIDEM explores how churches in Finland, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine navigate crises of democracy and war, highlighting their evolving role amidst Europe´s shifting landscapes.

In the midst of rising nationalism and ongoing war in Ukraine, this project aims to uncover the proactive and reactive agency of religious organizations in social engagement and theological reflection.

RELIDEM introduces a "Religious Agency in Crisis" model to analyze the dynamic interplay between grassroots initiatives and hierarchical responses across denominations, illuminating their agency in crises.

By examining their influence on social cohesion, political dynamics, and public opinion through methodological triangulation - combining interviews, discourse analysis, and grassroots research - the project provides insights into churches´ positions on war and democracy, their theological reassessments, and comparative analyses across traditions and nations.
