Purpose and goal: Maskinöversatt
The purpose of the project is to develop and install an online prototype and perform long-term tests for dry content measurement
of pulp after washing press in an industrial environment. The dry matter content is measured using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic
technology. In the project, we have primarily chosen to focus the implementation on testing the potential as well as evaluating the suitability of NIR spectroscopic measurement technology for online measurement of the dry content of the pulp from the last washing machine before bleaching the pulp. A continuous digitalisation of dry content variations in the washed pulp provides opportunities for monitoring and process control. Via control of the washing press, deviations in pulp concentration and chemical dosage in the subsequent bleaching process can be reduced. A more precise washing of the pulp and dosing of chemicals leads to a more efficient use of water and raw materials, while the emissions of COD (chemical oxygen demand) from the pulp mill are reduced. This improvement will increase the sustainability and competitiveness of the process industry.

In the project, a NIR probe (which is used today in ethanol production) is calibrated for measuring pulp dry matter content, the obtained prediction models are compared with previous results with a NIR camera. The project also includes assembling, evaluating and verifying a prototype for online measurement in a factory environment. Measurement is intended to be carried out over a longer test period.
During the test period, verification is carried out continuously and, if necessary, update of the NIR model.
