Organised Criminal Groups

This research environment analyses organised crime groups in Sweden by utilizing a large dataset based on the criminal cases involving EncroChat, SkyECC, and Anom services.

The offenders communicated under the assumption they were anonymous, and are often very explicit in discussing criminal activities. This provides new insights into the operations, activities and organization of organized criminal groups in Sweden.

Our aim is to improve police’s ability to disrupt these groups more effectively.The research environment consists of both criminologists and economists with expertise in social networks, organizational and geographical features, and causal analysis.

The criminal network findings will be associated with social network analysis of co-offending networks and police gang data from total population databases in Sweden to form a larger network of organized criminal groups.

The impact of police interventions against criminal groups will be evaluated, in terms of how it has affected their structure and ability to carry out crime.

We connect register data on the geographic areas with the aim of developing a predictive model that can identify locations where organized criminal groups potentially are active.This is an important research environment because of the severe problems that organized criminal groups are causing in Sweden.

Learning how to best disrupt the violence and illegitimate income generating activities can also inform authorities work in other countries.
