Technology-mediated nature experiences (TMNE) allow people to experience natural environments and phenomena through digital tools or products.
From citizen science apps to nature films and video games, technology mediates nature experiences to different extents and in a great variety of ways.
TMNE´s life cycle begins with the creation of a digital product, which is consumed by users, whose feedback can inform producers. Such use may lead to environmental knowledge, stronger connections to nature, and greater environmental citizenship.
However, the importance of such ‘by-products’ to producers and the role of human-nature relationships in product design are poorly understood.
Our interdisciplinary research project aims to investigate the challenges and opportunities of creating digital products for transformative nature engagement.
By bridging the gap between technology producers and users, the project aims to develop a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the role that technology plays in shaping our relationships with nature and the environment.
The project´s results will inform the development of more effective and impactful interventions in this area and contribute to a better understanding of the digital Anthropocene and its implications for human-nature relationships.
