The nomination for a Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professorship for 2025 concerns Manuela Boatcă,Professor of Sociology at the Albert Ludwig University Freiburg, Germany, who will be hosted by theDepartment of Gender Studies at Södertörn University during a seven-month stay (February 15 –October 15 , 2025).
Professor Boatcă is a leading scholar in global sociology, gender and thegeopolitics of knowledge; has been pioneering a novel research field investigating EasternEurope and Latin America as semiperipheries within the world-system from a post-/decolonial andintersectional perspective.
The motivation for bringing Boatcă to Södertörn University is to developthe local and national research in gender studies related to the regions of Eastern and South-EasternEurope and enrich it with her wider, reflexive view of “multiple Europes” and global post-/decolonialentanglements.
At Södertörn, Boatcă will be involved in research activities – including a book projectand the drafting of a research program (grand project) for the Foundation for Baltic and EastEuropean Studies.
She will present her own research and participate in teaching andworkshops with researchers and doctoral students in Gender Studies, the Critical Cultural Theoryresearch area and the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES). During her stay,Boatcă will also take part in activities at the Universities of Linköping, Lund and Uppsala.
