Our society has changed drastically in the last decade. The number of crimes against single individuals is steadily increasing while more people feel unsafe in public spaces.
Due to the increased crime rate and lack of safety, entire neighborhoods, residential areas, and high-crime areas risk getting a bad reputation.
This can lead to residents moving away, decreased property values, and reduced turnover for local businesses, which in turn can lead to a continued negative spiral of even more crime and lack of safety. An important question is how the physical environment in both downtown and residential areas as well as public places, and its design, affects the occurrence of crime and lack of safety.
One way to address these challenges is by integrating crime prevention and safety into the planning process. The project aims to develop a digital project tool based on a national standard, showing how cities and residential areas can be planned, built, and managed from a security and safety perspective.
The digital tool can be used in both new and ongoing planning and construction projects. The needs that the tool aims to fulfill are to provide a clearer overview of safety and security issues, a common place for information, planning and communication as well as a smoother work process and increased collaboration within planning and construction projects. The tool is aimed at actors who directly or indirectly develop the physical environment in Swedish cities and municipalities.
The target group includes politicians, urban planners, architects, construction companies, property owners, property managers, police officers, tenant associations and companies, etc.Project activities primarily involve testing and evaluating an existing prototype, updating the content and developing a finished version, as well as disseminating the results at national and international level.
