Grant Description

New cells continue to be generated throughout life to replace lost cells, but also for adaptation to new conditions or to regenerate injured tissues.

There are, however, obvious limits to the regenerative capacity in humans, and there is a large unmet medical need for new cell replacement therapies.

There is for example very limited regeneration and functional recovery after injuries or diseases affecting the brain and heart, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality. However, there is emerging evidence of a latent regenerative potential in these and other organs.

To harness this potential, there is a need to understand the mechanisms and molecular regulation underlying cell regeneration, which is the purpose of the proposed project with the aims: 1. Development of methodology and creation of an infrastructure for studying cell generation.2.

Neurogenesis in the adult human brain – studies of cell lineages, molecular regulation and alterations in human disease.3.

Cell generation in the human heart – studies of cell lineages, molecular regulation and alterations in human disease. The project entails substantial development of novel and innovative methodology.

These strategies have enormous potential to unveil biological processes in areas well beyond regenerative medicine and will have broad impact on biomedical research.
