Archaeology is an intrinsically interdisciplinary field and the only humanities subject which studies the long-term human past, using natural science methods to provide empirical evidence for human-environment-climate interactions.
We propose the creation of a national infrastructure for Sweden’s present archaeological research laboratories to spearhead Sweden’s contribution to our understanding of the past.
It will support and enhance interdisciplinary science in fields where methods and source materials from archaeological research are relevant, raise the standard of the use of scientific methods in archaeological research, and enhance and expand the communication of results and information on scientific archaeology to the research community, industry, museums and public.
Furthermore, it will secure quality assurance, raise the quality of Swedish archaeological research and increase international competitiveness, and provide long-term stability and continuity in order to increase the impact of archaeology in Sweden, and globally.
The infrastructure will facilitate novel and ground-breaking research, maintain the cutting edge of methods development, and ensure the availability and accessibility of existing and emerging methods.
Archlab’s primary aim is to ensure the continued provision of services for the creation and analysis of primary archaeological science data, and thus contribute to our understanding of past human activities, societies, environments and climates.
