Grant Description

The scientific goal of Biobank Sweden (BIS) is to provide efficient, coordinated and sustainable use of biobank samples and associated healthcare and molecular analysis data as the basis for internationally leading research.

The infrastructure was initiated in 2018 and is a consortium of all Swedish universities with medical faculties (Universities of Umeå, Uppsala, Örebro, Linköping, Göteborg, Lund and the Karolinska Institute) and their respective healthcare providers (Region Västerbotten, Region Uppsala, Region Örebro län, Region Östergötland, Västra Götalandsregionen, Region Skåne and Region Stockholm).

The consortium is governed by an Overarching Agreement between the partners, a Collaboration Agreement relating to the VR funding and local collaboration agreements.

In its full-scale phase from 2020, continued here, BiS strives towards provisioning of nation-wide services, national harmonization of IT systems, national solutions for ELSI issues including consent, optimized use of existing biobank samples for research and active contribution to the European biobank infrastructure BBMRI-ERIC.The infrastructure consists of the following operational modules:Organization and managementAdministrative, legal and ethical supportLocal integrationNational integrationInternational integrationBiobank ServiceIT development and supportPrioritised national development projects
