Gender Studies is rooted in Humanities disciplines ranging from ethnology to history, literary studies, art, and philosophy.
Currently, the humanities are being transformed due to the digitalization of culture, and the use of digital skills and methods in higher education.
The purpose of this Graduate School is therefore to explore how gender matters in these digital cultural and academic contexts, and to teach digital methods and research skills fit for the labour market of the 21st century, while also strengthening gender humanities research.
The Graduate School is a collaboration between Gender Studies at Uppsala University (coordinator), Stockholm University and Södertörn University.
The 9 PhD students (3 per university) jointly attend 3 core courses: ‘Feminist Ethnography’, ‘Digital Feminist Theory’ and ‘Cultural Analytics’ (also open to PhDs internationally) designed to teach both theoretical frameworks and practical digital skills. PhD students have joint seminars and workshops, as well as individually tailored courses.
Their theses will focus on areas such as digital media genres and gender/diversity ( museums; exhibitions; immersive media; games; social media; born digital productions); digitality in cultural/aesthetic experiences and production; digital media cultures, connectivity and gender/diversity (activism; hashtag publics, communities); digital media consumption/production and gender/diversity; and digital research methods and gender/diversity.
