Grant Description

Professor Jan Grabowski is a full professor in history at University of Ottawa, Canada.

As a historian of the Holocaust, or more specifically, a historian of the Holocaust in Poland, professor Grabowski have spent the last twenty years actively researching the issues touching upon the Jewish-Polish relations during the Shoah.

More recently, he has turned his attention to the open ghettos, small or mid-size ghettos which received much less historical scrutiny than their larger counterparts.

He is interested in the ways in which social and institutional control coming from the outside transformed these allegedly “open” spaces into prisons for the ghettoized Jewish inhabitants.

Within the subject of history at the Department of history, Lund university there is a strong research tradition linked to the study of anti-Semitism, racism, Jewish history, the Holocaust and memory, themes that are much in line with Grabowski’s work.

The department is keen to strategically strengthen this environment concerning research about antisemitism and the Holocaust and the geographical focus on eastern Europe further through seminar activities, stimulation of research applications for projects and networks and collaboration both within Lund University as well as nationally and internationally.

Jan Grabowski would be a very good injection in this endeavor.
