The Holocaust is one of the greatest human tragedies in world history. It is considered a defining event that affects identities and our understanding of history.
But the experiences of the Holocaust also have relevance for how we should relate to the future. The research within the network "Holocaust memories as mediation and embodiment" will fill a gap regarding memory studies about the Holocaust in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Lithuania.
By investigating how the Holocaust as a collective memory was shaped and mediated in different areas of society such as culture, politics and education and in neighboring geographical areas with different experiences of the Holocaust, we can not only increase our understanding of how the memory of the Holocaust was shaped, but also open up to questions whether it is the memories or the historical events that form the basis of our understanding of history. With the network, we want to increase the opportunity for collaboration between different research areas and different universities, and strengthen the exchange of experience between established researchers and academically younger researchers by jointly writing new research applications and thus building long-term collaborations. The network is based on four planned sub-studies and is led by docent Henrik Rosengren. We will meet at a number of workshops in years 1 and 2, organize a conference in year 2 and publish an edited volume in year 3.
