Centre for Additive Manufacture - Metal (CAM2) phase2

Purpose and goal:

The aim of the Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal (CAM2) is to increase the use of powder-based metal additive manufacturing for added-value products by addressing critical research questions involving core competencies and excellence in powder metallurgy science, advanced materials characterization, process development and simulation. Through the close co-operation between academia, industry and institute, the centre aims at creating a breeding ground for research and innovation in support for industrial implementation and global competitiveness in metal AM.

Expected results and effects:

The CAM2 centre will result in increased competence through internationally recognized research, engineers and PhDs with critical competences and skills with impact on industrial competitiveness with respect to novel powder materials, efficient and robust manufacturing processes and improved products, leading to overall shift of AM towards full scale industrialization. On long term this means widened use of powder-based AM into new product areas, new materials and processes for novel products, world-leading research groups and innovation in specific fields of metal AM.

Approach and implementation:

The centre will focus on critical research areas related to the value chain from powder to final product, involving the close co-operation between industry, academia and institute. The centre is coordinated by Chalmers and at start involves 5 research organizations and 28 companies, ranging from large enterprises to SMEs. Through its management structure and international advisory board, research towards joint goals combining excellence and industrial relevance is affirmed, involving academic and industrial PhD student projects, post-docs and staff mobility.
