In September 2023, the UN General Assembly will gather at the SDG Summit for review of the 2030 Agenda.
The SDG Summit 2023 will mark the start of a new phase and accelerated implementation. The track record from the first half of the implementation period is poor, and few targets are likely to be met by 2030. The UN is calling for scaled-up action.
But will more of the same suffice for better delivery on the 2030 Agenda? It is now time for reflection and ensuring the second half of implementation builds on insights from the first phase. What is known about how Agenda 2030 promotes global sustainable development?
Which are the scientific community’s key messages to decision-makers at the SDG Summit? At the time of the SDG Summit, this project is an effort to promote a science-based acceleration of the SDGs. The primary target group is decision-makers at the SDG Summit.
The project’s goals are to i) synthesize and package key insights from the scientific community about SDG acceleration ii) amplify these insights to enhance accessibility, uptake and sense-making by decision-makers ahead of SDG Summit iii) enhance understanding within the scientific community of how decision-makers make sense of research findings.
These goals are achieved through a campaign in social and traditional media, designed to promote “sense-making” of research findings, and a survey. The project is carried out by Stockholm Environment Institute, Linköping University and the International Science Council.
