Grant Description

Purpose and goal: Previous studies have identified a number of challenges for use of local 5G networks and local spectrum. There are two overall aims of the project:

1. To evaluate the performance, costs and possible "benefits" of local 5G networks in an industrial environment with the technical and business conditions that exist in 2022 -2024.

2. To ensure that both users and suppliers of local 5G networks have insight into requirements and conditions related to technical characteristics, impact of interference, costs and spectrum allocation for local 5G networks in an industrial environment. Expected results and effects:

For users of 5G systems in production, the results can provide guidance as to whether 5G is a platform that de facto has the potential to drive industrial digitalisation.

For suppliers of systems and equipment to the industry, conditions are given to develop their sales towards customers who switch to wireless connection based on 5G technology.

Mobile operators and third-party actors will gain increased insight into how local 5G and macro networks can coexist, and how to use local licenses in the own business. PTS obtains additional input on the industrial benefit of local frequencies. Approach and implementation:

The project includes Scania and Boliden as industrial users of local 5G networks, Åkerströms as a supplier of equipment, Tele2 as a supplier of mobile networks & services, the regulatory authority for telecom (PTS) and KTH as coordinator. The work is organized in work packages: 1. Description of requirements, scenarios, use cases and test case

2. Development of 5G equipment for test 3. Test of system concepts and performance in real environment 4. Analysis of interference and coexistence between macro network and local network 5. Documentation, reporting and dissemination of results
