This application nominates Prof. Daniel Phillips of Ohio University, USA for the Tage Erlander visiting professorship in 2024. Prof.
Phillips is a world-leading expert in effective field theories, a model-independent approach used prominently in subatomic physics to study the fundamental constituents of matter.Prof. Phillips is a highly cited researcher with a prominent standing in the scientific community.
He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, an Ohio University Presidential Research Scholar, and has held distinguished Visiting Professorships in Germany and Japan. This nomination is supported by seven research groups in both theoretical and experimental nuclear, hadronic and astroparticle physics at three different universities (Chalmers, Lund and Uppsala).
As indicated by this broad support, the competence of the visiting professor will strongly benefit the scientific area in general in Sweden.
Specifically we outline five projects, as well as other potential research avenues, that will involve several senior and junior researchers. The visiting professorship will be associated with a postdoctoral fellow and involves two main stays: (i) a six-month employment at Chalmers in the spring of 2024 and (ii) a two-month visit in the summer of 2025.
In addition, there will be a preparatory visit in 2023 (paid by other grants) and two shorter visits in 2024 and 2025. In total, Prof. Phillips will spend ten months in Sweden.
