As COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out, vaccine-induced protection in the general population and immunosuppressed patients remains unclear.
Collaborative research is critical to optimize vaccination outcomes. We propose to combine real-life vaccine surveillance of effectiveness and safety of COVID-19 vaccines using national register data, with laboratory analysis of immunological vaccine effects in risk groups for vaccine failure.
The project will build a rich infrastructure for pandemic preparedness. The project will use existing infrastructure, including our national register study of COVID-19 vaccination.
Data sources include the national Vaccination Register, national PCR test data, National Patient Register, Cause-of-Death Register, and primary care data, to study outcomes in COVID-19 patients, vaccinated and comparison groups.Immunological effects of vaccination will be monitored in cohorts enrolled in prospective studies of COVID-19 immunity: patients with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies (likely to respond suboptimally to vaccination) and immunocompetent controls.
We will use and extend an established comprehensive methods platform.Register study data on patient groups exhibiting vaccine failure will guide further selection of cohorts for immunological studies, and the combined results will guide recommendations for clinical follow-up and booster vaccination protocols.
The project will establish a national infrastructure for pandemic preparedness.
