An important role of education is to transfer values to growing generations.
Because of the significance of human rights values, schools are assigned responsibility for educating children and young people about the role that human rights play in their own and others´ life, and in the vitality of democratic regimes.
This is what the United Nations label human rights education.Research that examines how schools form a rights promoting environment and how they educate children about human rights is of limited scope, but have identified aspects that seem to hinder such an environment and the undertaking of human rights education.
More and widened research and innovative thinking and studies are needed, as is a developed theory ground for research into human rights education for children.
The network will be a catalyst for new theorising and ground-breaking international research collaboration, aiming to contribute to a robust understanding of human rights education for children and young people in formal schooling.
Led by an international steering group, the network will arrange physical and web-based meetings, and support research visits and conference participation.
The network also involves targeted activities designed to build capacity among emerging researchers and to broaden participation in children´s rights research of scholars from underrepresented regions. The network is expected to be a driving force for expanded research, and a base for long-term collaborations.
