Purpose and goal:
Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS) is a national infrastructure that aims for equal implementation of precision medicine with the objective that all Sweden´s citizens should have access to precision diagnostics to enable more personalised care and treatment as well as prevention. At the same time, GMS strengthens Sweden´s research and innovation in precision medicine, to develop tomorrow´s diagnostics and treatments in collaboration with the industry.
GMS focuses on rare hereditary diseases, cancer, microbiology/infectious diseases, complex diseases and pharmacogenomics. Expected results and effects:
GMS aim is to create conditions for a broad and equal introduction of precision medicine in Sweden. This by including the country´s seven regions with university healthcare and the seven universities with a medical faculty, as well as through collaboration with the industry, patient associations and authorities. GMS focuses on building national and regional structures for precision medicine.
The goal is that all patients should have access to precision diagnostics / treatment via regional Genomic Medicine Centers (GMC) and have the opportunity to be included in clinical trials. Approach and implementation:
GMS will continue to work with the national and regional implementation of precision medicine in healthcare through the regional GMCs, strengthen translational and clinical research and innovation in precision medicine, and work to push for and solve legal and health economic issues. In addition, work is underway on the commissioning of the National Genomics Platform in order to be able to securely and effectively share genomics data across the country.
Through national and international collaborative projects, operations within GMS focus areas are further developed.
