Incubator for national platforms for systematic validation of AI in diagnostic imaging (startup)

Purpose and goal:

The environment´s objective is to develop the Swedish healthcare system´s ability, across the country, to perform systematic clinical validation of commercially available AI software that is intended to function as decision support in imaging diagnostics. The innovation environment is an incubator for validation platforms. Three national platforms will be created which, after the project, will function independently and sustainably in ordinary care operations.

A key objective is also to build a general ability to effectively create further data-driven validation platforms. Expected results and effects:

The expected effect of the environment is that Swedish care providers will be able to deeply renew tools and working practices, greatly improving care quality and productivity, for the benefit of their patients. AI support will go from theoretical vision to everyday technology, and Sweden will be leading in turning the AI promise into healthcare benefits in a safe way.

In the short term, the project is expected to provide a strong acceleration of the introduction of AI tools in the most mature areas, and in the long term to spread this acceleration widely in data-driven medical technology. Approach and implementation:

The initial focus is on a pilot project building a platform for mammography screening. Later, platforms for stroke in radiology and prostate cancer in pathology will be initiated, which will be prepared for launch immediately after the project. A project team carries out the platform development under supervision of medical/scientific expertise.

Both the care providers´ regular organization and patient organizations are actively involved. The overall incubator work is led by a programme developer, where the knowledge dissemination primarily takes place through AIDA.
