Purpose and goal:
The purpose of the project was to test the hypothesis that glass can be laminated with foils of bio-based polysaccharides, which has proved to be possible. Ten candidate materials for glass laminating foil have been developed in the laboratory as well as identified among commercially available materials, which is more than anticipated. Some of the materials are completely fossil-free, while others are biodegradable and partially fossil-free. The raw materials used come from agriculture and the forest industry.
Expected results and effects:
More than fifteen prototypes in the form of material variants, foils and glass laminates have been produced. Lamination has worked well with one of the laboratory prototypes and three commercial materials, thus introducing new areas for use. The appearance varies from beige-yellow opaque to slightly milky but transparent.
The project group has also identified areas of use for non-transparent and tinted variants. Tests and evaluations of partners show that mechanical, optical and thermal properties are promising but further development will be required. Approach and implementation:
Fossil-free materials have been designed in the laboratory. Biodegradable and partially fossil-free raw materials available on the market have been mapped and tested. Films for test lamination have been made by casting or pressing.
Test lamination has been done with vacuum and autoclave technology. Properties of materials and glass laminates have been tested in various laboratories at the parties. Visual evaluation has been performed by the group´s needs owners.
The project collaboration has been company-wide to utilize the group´s strengths and opportunities.
