Purpose and goal:
The purpose of the project was to investigate alternative materials to replace cement in soil stabilization, focusing on industrial waste streams and calcined clays. Objectives included assessing environmental risks and identifying stabilizing effects. We met these objectives through extensive testing and analysis. Although industrial waste was problematic due to heavy metals and lack of recycling criteria, calcined clays proved to be effective cement replacements.
Expected results and effects:
Results indicated that calcined clays have significant potential as cement replacement materials in soil stabilization, showing improved soil stability and durability. Industrial waste streams with high heavy metal content were difficult to integrate due to the lack of recycling criteria. Leaching tests highlighted environmental challenges. Expected effects include increased use of calcined clays and better understanding of industrial waste risks and opportunities.
Approach and implementation:
The project was conducted in several stages: an initial literature review identified potential materials, followed by laboratory tests to assess physical and chemical properties and environmental impact through leaching tests. The analysis primarily focused on calcined clays, which proved to be a successful choice. Through systematic planning and execution, reliable results were obtained, providing a solid foundation for further research.
