The project aimed to scale up the testing of Rivus´ environmentally friendly organic electrolytes for flow batteries. Large-scale organic synthesis was used to produce 100 kg of Rivus´ negative electrolyte, which had previously only been produced on a single gram scale. 100 kg of the positive electrolyte was purchased. Hardware for a vanadium flow battery was successfully adapted to work for Rivus organic electrolytes, and cycling has been initiated of the battery where expected capacity has been achieved.

The result of the project was a profoundly increased understanding in the function of the scale-up possibilities around Rivu´s electrolytes. Problems arose during the first scaling-up attempt, which led to a modification of Rivus´ electrolytes, which in turn led to increased energy density of the system. A production method for the large-scale synthesis of Rivus negative electrolyte has resulted.
Furthermore, Rivu´s team has developed competence in the operation of flow batteries and gained an understanding of the use of their electrolytes. Approach and implementation: ** Denna text är maskinöversatt **
The project was delayed due to a number of circumstances. Covid-19 led to major delays in both electrolyte materials and flow battery hardware. More quality assurance of the material produced in the large-scale synthesis was performed than initially expected to ensure that the material used can be used in the flow battery without being forfeited. Finally, a lot of alternative equipment and electronics needed to be purchased/developed to enable the operation of the battery.
