Purpose and goal:
INTERSEC_RACE conducted an in-depth empirical study in Morocco to examine the nexus between migration politics and the socio-political operation of contemporary racism at its intersection with gender-based discrimination and violence against Sub-Saharan immigrants. Using an intersectional lens, the study examined how racism and gender intersect and addressed the gendered dimensions of racism and anti-racism.
The empirical analysis used a mixed-method approach and relied on desktop research and field research of 10 months in Morocco, incl. 45 interviews with key actors Expected results and effects:
The results of this research will be published with Cambridge University Press in 2024. The PI has also submitted 3 academic articles and she is publishing a co-edited book of which she is the main editor with Elgar Press. Two peer-reviewed articles are already published and 1 podcast series of 4 episode called Building Hopes.
Approach and implementation:
The empirical analysis used a mixed-method approach and relied on desktop research, discourseanalysis and field research of 10 months in Morocco. It combined about 45 semi-structured interviews with a multiplicity of actors, participant observation of key events, and a selection of key texts produced by political elites and their challengers. Based on key findings of the empirical research, the project developed public engagement activities in Morocco, with local academics and non-academic partner organizations to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of racism.
