Bakgrund: Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is a novel syndrome with a substantial morbidity and mortality. Patients with TS
maintain normal or near-normal cardiac output despite extensive left ventricular akinesia which is not survivable during acute myocardial infarction. TS, therefore, challenges our fundamental understanding of cardiovascular physiology. Målsättning:
We will elucidate the incidence and the consequences of TS in Sweden. We will investigate how off-label treatment of TS affects health outcomes. We will investigate whether TS has different molecular and hemodynamic phenotype compared to acute heart failure due to other etiology. We will study the association
between TS and increased risk of malignancies and mechanisms for the increased risk. Arbetsplan:
We will apply an integrated approach involving epidemiological studies in national registries, in vivo and in vitro experiments. This knowledge will be used to refine the national and international guidelines for diagnostics and treatment of TS. Betydelse:
Insights into the epidemiology and adequate treatment of TS may have an immediate beneficial impact on the current clinical practice, patient safety, and prognosis. Increased understanding of TS at
the basic science level is important for the development of measures that may decrease and eventually prevent TS in the future. Our study will provide valuable new knowledge about how hemodynamic, molecular, and neurohormonal differs between TS and acute HF due MI and cardiomyopathy.
