The overarching aim of the project is to make a contribution to the philosophical debate about the nature of value and morality.
The contribution of the project aims to make progress in the philosophical debate by making sense of the distinction between relational and non-relational value.
Such a contribution is necessary in order to defend and give a comprehensive account of moral theories that assumes that morality is inherently interpersonal and relational. The first two years of the project takes place at Humboldt Universität Zu Berlin (HU) and the last year takes place at Lund University.
The project will utilize contemporary analytic philosophical method, characterized by conceptual analysis and reflective equilibrium.
The theoretical entry point is a pattern of analysis according to which value is to be understood in terms of fitting attitudes.
One of the original contribution of the project is that, compared to previous research, will focus on for whom the attitude needs to be fitting rather on what kind of attitude is fitting.Contemporary moral theories assume that morality is inherently relational in order to explain the directed nature of morality.
When I violate a moral obligation I do not simply do wrong, I wrong someone.
These recent advances within moral philosophy has, however, paid insufficient attention that what consequences such a view has for moral values such as blameworthiness.
