The vision is to establish frontline technology and components for characterization in the terahertz gap. Electromagnetic radiation is omnipresent in society.
Different parts of the spectrum are used in science, medicine, inspection, security, defence, and communication to mention just a few.
Nevertheless, technological limitations prevent exploitation of the full spectrum, e.g. the frequency range 0.1-10 THz, the so-called “terahertz gap” is a range where the adequate receiver and transmitter technologies have been lacking and a major obstacle is the access to advanced measurement equipment.
Based on this overall objective, we will unite our expertise and efforts to work toward the following specific goals:Evaluate THz probes for waver level measurements up to 1.5 THz;Develop precision mechanical machining of components up to 10 THz;Develop techniques for antenna characterisation up to 1 THz;Develop methods for investigating reliability of devices. The THz spectral region is by far the least explored portion and hence the last frontier of the electromagnetic spectrum, largely because of the difficulty in measurements at these frequencies.
The outcome of the project will enable advanced components and characterisation techniques of strategic importance for the microwave and THz community.
Thus, enabling new science, e.g. remote sensing for atmospheric science and radio astronomy, as well as technology for communication, security and inspection using THz waves.
