Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

To understand how new technology in cars with visual information can improve safety and information visibility, the SCREENS project has conducted studies involving Head-Up Displays and Camera Monitor Systems (CMS).

The purpose of the SCREENS project was to develop visual information design guidelines for Augmented Reality Head-Up Displays (AR-HUD) and Camera Monitor Systems (CMS) to improve traffic safety and in-vehicle measurement procedures for both HUD and CMS. The project has had a good fulfillment of both project goals and program goals.

Expected results and effects:

Practical measurement methods for displays in cars have been developed. Positive results for traffic safety were shown for AR-HUD and CMS with AR. Relationship between image quality and temperature has been developed for cold LCD displays.

The results will be taken forward in future continuation projects such as Vinnova FFI SCREENS 2 (submitted dnr: 2023-00755), which meets the needs of the Swedish automotive industry to create a traffic-safe and healthy interaction between drivers and vehicles in the trend towards more automated vehicles and digitalized information environment.

Approach and implementation:

The work was organized to achieve the five specific goals that were set for the project. Throughout the entire project period, the project had an overall project meeting every two weeks. To this were added specific meetings for the individual work items, which were organized regularly but as needed.

With the help of online meetings, the distance between Stockholm and Gothenburg has not affected the project negatively. Work visits have been carried out on several occasions during the course of the project. Overall, the arrangement seems to have worked well.
