Purpose and goal:
The aim with this project was to verify that it is possible to build a 3rd party system to analyze and evaluate the adhesive application quality in glued finger joints in construction wood (CW & CLT). In collaboration with Swedish sawmills, we have achieved the following objectives:
- Verified that it is possible to detect and measure applied adhesive during finger jointing of wood using video analysis technology.
- Verified that it is possible to analyze the quality of the workpieces with regard to cracks, twigs and defects in milling. - Taken the technology to production level. Expected results and effects: This project has enabled us to independently produce and package this as a standardized project solution.
We expect to be able to deliver a number of systems for quality monitoring of the production of structural timber in the coming years. Approach and implementation: The project was divided the project in three steps:
1. Proof-of-Concept - A simple test where we collected a number of images, in different production lines. These were analyzed with image analysis tools to extract as much information as possible.
2. Analysis - development of robust analysis algorithms that provide consistent results across many iterations, as well as a basic user interface. 3. Pilot - Carrying out a test installation in two different environments. The setup has worked well but we had underestimated the mechanical difficulties in the industrial environment.
