Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

-exploit the potential of lignin-based graphene for the development of a renewable and low-cost sensing solution for food packaging

-to use inkjet printing for the manufacture of temperature and relative humidity sensors using lignin-based graphene in the ink composition to increase its conductivity and sensitivity -To analyse the market for bio-based graphene sensors. Expected results and effects:

Graphene oxide was successfully produced from soft- and hard wood lignins. Different qualities of MFC were produced and tested for resistance of sensor printing.

The fabrication of printed humidity sensors on different substrates was successfully demonstrated The printability of carbon-based interdigitated electrodes over different MFC substrates, Kraft paper and polymer substrate was successfully demonstrated. Basic demonstrator with visual indication of the dynamic and magnitude of sensor response was constructed.

Approach and implementation:

The project was design to contain 6 work packages covering management, production of lignin, substrate for graphene production, production of microfibrillated cellulose, substrate for the printed electronics, development and production of Graphene, manufacturing of printed lignin-based graphene sensors and market evaluation for bio-based sensor for food packaging.
