Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

Enuresis is most commonly treated with an enuresis alarm, a behavioral treatment that wakes the child up when he urinates. The treatment continues for at least 6 weeks but usually continuously for 3 months. Today, this treatment is carried out almost exclusively on one´s own, at home with some guidance from the healthcare system. It is estimated that 50% of children who are treated in this way reach a successful treatment.

One problem with enuresis alarms is that we have a lack of knowledge about predictive factors that can tell early on which children will be helped by the treatment. Expected results and effects:

Bedwetting is one of the most common health problems among children worldwide, in Sweden it is the second most common disease.

Through the project, Region Uppsala, together with leading researchers and the company Pjama AB, has launched a functioning service on a large scale, adapted motivation/guidance for the individual child with a parent so that more people reach successful treatment. The project has contributed to increased understanding of the disease and enables early adaptation of the treatment to the individual and reduced pressure on the healthcare system.

Approach and implementation:

The healthcare system identified patients who were deemed suitable for treatment with enuresis alarms and who wanted to participate in the study. The children generated data to find predictive factors of the treatment being successful.

A larger evaluation with 200 children where tips and advice and based on the data collected was carried out. The evaluation measured how many more children reach successful treatment.

The bedwetting service was verified and evaluated with families who used the bedwetting alarm and the service during the bedwetting treatment on a larger scale.
