New perspectives on interprofessional education in health care: development of an international research approach

Globally, learning to collaborate across professions is seen as crucial to assure patient safety and the changing demands of health care.

Joint research beyond context case descriptions are needed to inform curriculum design for interprofessional education (IPE) in professional health programmes.

The purpose and aims of this international workshop are a) to develop a theoretical framework and collaborative design for research (2021), and b) to deliver an application (2022) for funding of a collaborative research project between four universities, located in Sweden, Norway, Australia, New Zealand respectively.

Monthly online meetings will be conducted, based on analyses of IPE at the local sites, to explore practice architectures as a theoretical conceptualisation and methodological design of the research project in 2021. One face-to-face workshop will be held in Linköping, prior to finalising the application for funding March 2022.

The workshop will be co-ordinated from Linköping and make use of a digital platform for common communication, planning, drafting and storage of documents.

The workshop is innovative and important for educational science research in health by providing a model for how a practice-oriented, theoretical framework and a multiple case research design that attune to specific cultural and practice contexts while also enabling core questions about IPE to be addressed can develop new knowledge of how IPE can be conceptualised and collaboratively researched.
