Carbon Black (CB) is a man made, paracrystalline form of carbon, and one of the most widely used carbon-based industrial chemicals made today from incomplete combustion of heavy, fossil-based feedstocks.
The overall goal with this project is to replace the fossil-based feedstocks with renewable feedstocks from the forest by producing Green Carbon Black (GCB).
The proposed project has a holistic approach, from feedstock to applications for GCB, to avoid sub-optimization of separate process steps.
First, we investigate the influence of renewable based feedstock - different type of biomass powder, pyrolysis oil made from biomass, and upgraded pyrolysis oil - on the yield and quality of the produced GCB.
Thereafter we assess both appropriate applications areas for the GCB, e.g. reinforcement agent in tires, electronic applications, and evaluate the technoeconomic of the whole value chain from feedstock to final application.
