It has long been recognized that understanding fisher behavior is key to successful fisheries management and, in the end, long-term sustainability of the fish resource.
In this project, we contribute to our understanding of fisher behavior by developing novel empirical models of the fisher’s decision on where and what to fish. The models are used to identify key factors influencing this decision in Swedish fisheries.
The models are also used to analyze the economic effects of environmental regulations, such as increased protection of Natura2000 areas.
Fisheries models at this fine scale are not currently available for Swedish fisheries management and would contribute with a highly valuable tool for practical management.
