Abstract: Frames of coexistenceThis proposal nominates Professor Ash Amin, Cambridge University, UK, for the Olof Palme Guest Professorship in 2021.
Professor Amin is a world-leading geographer renowned for his work on multiculturalism, regional development, urban infrastructures, public space and the politics of commons. The visit is planned for the period January 1 to August 31, 2021. He will be hosted by the Department of History of Science and Ideas, Uppsala University.
Although his research is not situated in the field of Peace Studies, for the last 25-years Ash Amin has worked on the dynamics of coexistence between strangers.
The research activities that are planned for his visit to Sweden will all revolve around the theme of "Frames of coexistence." The collaborative framework for this work is provided by a major research initiative that aims to develop a historical and comparative understanding of anti-public ideas and forms of activism and belonging in post-1989 Europe.
This program is called "Thinking publics, building society: Defining a European era", and at its intellectual core is an effort to integrate approaches from cultural, social and political theory.
The transdisciplinary orientation and ethos of Professor Amin´s research, and its relevance to different schools of thought in the humanities and social sciences, will be an important contribution to the development of this program and to the Swedish research community at large.
