This nomination for a Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professorship concerns Sujata Patel, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, India, who will be hosted by the Department of Sociology, Umeå University, in partnership with the Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), Linköping University, during the period 15 January—15 December 2021 (including a two months summer break).
Professor Patel is a world leading scholar in the areas of global social theory, global sociology and history of sociology.
The motivation for bringing Patel to Umeå University and Linköping University is to develop existing local and national initiatives related to her fields of expertise.
In Umeå, Patel will be actively involved in research activities – including a book project in collaboration with the Global Social Theory seminar group – and in teaching – in PhD and graduate courses on Social Science in Context, Intersectionality, Global Sociology, Postcolonial Theory, and Social Theory.
In Linköping, she will hold a research seminar and teach in the master’s programme on Migration and Ethnicity.
In addition a national PhD course will be jointly organised by the Department of Sociology in Umeå and the REMESO Institute in Norrköping, as well as a related international workshop.
During the year Patel will also present her research at other departments at Umeå University as well as at Lund University and Uppsala University.
