On December 14, 2006, the Chinese Government granted $7.66 million USD to Rwanda for the construction of a new Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINAFET) headquarters in Kigali. The project was implemented by Beijing Construction Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (BCEG). Construction began on December 22, 2006.
On January 14, 2009, the Chinese Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, handed the office block over to the MINAFET. The new office complex takes up an area of 7,689 square meters, which over 200 employees work in.
Some sources record the value of the office building as $8.9 million USD. The official ECCO source lists the grant as $7.66 million, therefore the transaction amount is recorded as the reported official amount.
