In August 2004, the Liberian Foreign, Commerce and Agriculture Ministers visited China and requested the Chinese Government to assist Liberia with the procurement of rice.
For this, China agreed to provide a 15 million RMB grant for the provision of 3650 metric tons of rice, specifically Chinese "butter rice".
The rice was delivered in two shipments, with 1315 tons arriving first, and the remaining 2335 tons arriving a few weeks later.
The second lot of 2335 tons of rice was said to be taken care of by the Liberia Rice Dealer Association and the Liberian Marketing Association. The rice arrived in Liberia between January 27 and February 12, 2005.
On February 24, 2005, the 3650 tons of rice provided by the Chinese government to the Liberian government was officially handed over to the Liberian government, marking the completion of the project.
