Grant Description
In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2018 by the UNPDF, USD $773,805 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to strengthen the capacity of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) under the BRI to design and implement policies that promote transport connectivity and achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The project aimed to help LLDCs improve trade potential, integrate into global markets, and advance structural transformation and socio-economic development.
Key outputs included three Regional Review Meetings in 2019 (Africa, Latin America, Euro-Asia); contributions to the High-Level Midterm Review of the Vienna Programme of Action (VPoA) in 2019; support for the adoption of the Roadmap for Accelerated Implementation of the VPoA at the 2020 LLDCs’ Ministerial Meeting; and the development of training materials on policy options for transport connectivity.
The project was co-implemented with the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), in collaboration with UNDESA, UNESCAP, UNECA, UNECLAC, UNECE, the Ministry of Transport of China, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Its scheduled duration was from November 2018 to October 2021.
