In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2022 by the UNPDF, USD $1,282,412 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to accelerate the achievement of universal social protection and contribute to poverty eradication by strengthening governance and advancing the digital transformation of social protection systems.
While focusing on Laos and Tajikistan—where over 87% and 73% of the population respectively lack income security—the project aims to develop tools and lessons for broader application across the Global South.
Activities include targeted technical support through the International Labour Organization (ILO) country offices to improve governance, social security administration, and institutional technical capacity, alongside the creation of a global knowledge base of good practices and training modules on digitalized social protection planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
These resources will be shared through the UN Resident Coordinator network, UNDESA and ILO websites, international workshops, and courses at the ILO International Training Centre in Turin.
The project is implemented by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the ILO, in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator system, UN Country Teams, the International Training Centre of the ILO, and the national governments of China, Laos, and Tajikistan. Its scheduled duration is from June 2023 to May 2025.
