In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute USD $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2020 and implemented between January 2021 and December 2024, USD $1,070,000 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to support structural transformation efforts in African member countries of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The countries targeted for this project included Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) implemented the project, along with collaborating partners UNECA, UNIDO, and UNCTs.
The goal of this initiative is to bolster trade and investment opportunities by enhancing the productive capacities of pilot countries and maximizing the benefits of the Belt and Road initiative.
The UNCTAD established capacity‐building programmes and provided policy‐recommendations to member countries as part of the initiative.
