Grant Description

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.

The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.

The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.

Approved in 2021 by UNPDF, USD $1,198,400 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund aims to assist the targeted BRI countries in Asia in their efforts to reach SDGs and green transformation, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To achieve the 2030 Agenda (specifically SDGs 8, 9, 13, and 17), the project will lead to: 1) formulation of effective integrated policy strategies and improved capacity at national level, including South-South peer-learning; and 2) economic cooperation and policy coordination at regional level.

The project will enhance project countries’ capacity to adopt innovative and integrated policy strategies that address the vulnerabilities and binding constraints to pursue resilient, green and transformative development.

The project will facilitate South-South experience sharing and peer learning, using as a reference point China’s experience in promoting High Quality Development, to help overcome the capacity gap faced by project countries.

The project also aims to build an Asian Green Development Partnership Network (AGDPN) to foster partnership and strengthen policy coordination in the region.

This initiative aims to extract lessons from China's green industrialization experience, formulate integrated policy strategies for participating countries and facilitate knowledge sharing among policymakers. The target countries are Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan and Türkiye. The implementing entity is UNCTAD.

Collaborating partners are UNESCAP, UNECE, UNDP, UNRCOs in project countries BRI International Green Development Coalition, Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies, The Third World Network of Malaysia, Sustainable Development Policy Institute of Pakistan, and Istanbul Kadir Has University of Turkey.

The project's scheduled duration is January 2022 - December 2024.
