In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2023 by UNPDF, USD $1,199,986 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to enhance access to cardiovascular treatment in developing countries by strengthening their capacity in utilizing the PAN (Percutaneous and Non-fluoroscopic) Procedure, developed by Dr.
Pan Xiangbin and the heart disease treatment team at Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.
PAN is a novel surgical method that enables the treatment of common cardiovascular diseases without the need for a catheter lab or exposure to harmful radiation.
It improves access to and reduces the cost of cardiovascular care for many poor patients who cannot afford it, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Recognizing its impact, the PAN was awarded as one of the innovative solutions for health challenges by the WHO West Pacific in 2022.
By introducing and promoting the PAN Procedure, the project seeks to improve the quality of treatment for structural heart diseases, elevate the medical skills and knowledge of healthcare professionals in these countries, and establish collaborative networks among various stakeholders, including local medical institutions, healthcare systems, and international organizations.
Recipient countries include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Tanzania, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan. The implementing entity is UNDESA. Collaborating partners include: WHO, and the National Health Commission of China. The project's scheduled duration is March 2024 - March 2026.
Building the Capacity in Local Communities of Developing Countries to Achieve SDG3: Strengthening Treatment Capacity for Structural Heart Diseases using Percutaneous and Non-fluoroscopic Procedures in Developing Countries Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
