Grant Description

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute USD $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.

The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.

The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.

Approved in 2018 and implemented between November 2018 and October 2021, USD $1,046,909 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to help the countries of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and Tanzania reach certain 2030 Agenda goals.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) implemented the project, along with collaborating partners UNECA and UNESCAP, UNDP, and UN Resident Coordinators.

This project provided technical assistance and focused on policy coherence, financing national development priorities, and monitoring. Assistance was tailored to each country's needs. The project organized six workshops and one study tour from 2019 to 2021, engaging over 440 participants. In Bangladesh, the program bolstered data analysis on poverty estimates.

In Ethiopia, it updated statistical laws and strategies for national planning. In Lao PDR, it strengthened national planning and coordination with the statistics bureau. In Tanzania, it improved stakeholder participation in national planning and updated statistical legislation.
