In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute USD $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2017 and implemented between March 2018 and March 2020, USD $500,000 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund for HIV prevention in the African countries of Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Uganda, and Zambia. UNAIDS implemented the project with help from collaborating partners UNFPA, UNICEF, UNODC, WHO and the World Bank.
The project aimed to bolster HIV prevention measures at global and national levels through informing local leaders, building capacity in monitoring and evaluating programs, developing HIV prevention roadmaps, and putting a greater focus on adolescent girls and young women.
Strengthening national capacity for the implementation of the Global HIV Prevention Coalition Roadmap Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
