Grant Description

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute USD $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.

The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.

The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.

Approved in 2016 and implemented between September 2017 and February 2020, USD $500,001 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to strengthen and integrate migration policies into national development plans in Ethiopia and Ghana.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) implemented the project, along with the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) and national/ministerial authorities as collaborating partners.

The project aimed to strengthen institutional capacity, improve policy coherence, and align national migration strategies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 10.7 and 17.

The project headed 12 capacity building workshops, 2 study visits, and established national Technical Working Groups, which reached over 300 government actors and stakeholders.

As a result of the project, the IOM helped found the Migration Resource Center in Ethiopia and advanced the establishment of the Ghana National Commission on Migration.
